Many hundreds of years ago, there lived a group of Indigenous people called the Tiano. The Tiano lived on many islands in the Caribbean, one of which was Hispaniola. With around 1-2 million people, the Tiano were a mostly peaceful yet powerful tribe. They had advanced crops and fishing techniques. Since the Taino were mostly peaceful their military was not their main focus, so when Christopher Colombus came to Hispaniola the Taino were not prepared for the violence that would come. When the colonizers came they enslaved thousands to find gold and tortured and killed others for no good reason. They also brought diseases that the Taino were not able to defend themselves against. In the end the population went from 1-2 million people to less than 2,000 people left. Then in 1697, Spain gave away the third part of Hispaniola to France who took advantage of the sugar industry to become one of the wealthiest colonies in the world. However, the French needed more people to man the farms so they went to Africa and enslaved many hundreds of thousands of people. Soon there were more than 420,000 enslaved Africans and only around 30 white people. So after more than 100 years of colonization, Haiti rebelled against the white settlers. Led by Toussaint Louverture, groups of enslaved people came together killing many slave owners. After a while, Louverture had control of most of the west part of the island. Then in 1802 Louverture was captured and died in prison. So, Jean Jaque Dessalines took over and finally freed Haiti after many battles from colonization in 1804. Sadly though, recently Haiti’s government has collapsed, allowing for gangs mafias to take over. Because of this violence and destruction to take over. Since Haiti’s revolution was led by enslaved African people and mostly made up by them Haiti’s population is 95% of Black descent and 5% white or mixed. To sum it up Haiti has been controled by many dif powers, it’s history has been long and painful and is still developing today.
