The Artibonite River

The Artibonite River

The nature sorrounding the Artibonite

The biggest river on hispañola is Artibonite River. Starting in the Cibao mountains in the Dominican Republic it travels along the border until it crosses over into Haiti and goes into the Artibonite Plains. After 240 kilometers in distance the Artibonite river finally dumps off into the Gulf of La Ganâve although only 160 kilometers are navigatible. The Artibonite river has been used in many ways to help the communities it goes through. In the 1930’s the Government put up the Péligre dam to be able to control floods better, later the dam created a reservoir now known as Péligre Lake. Another time lots of irrigated land was developed in the Artibonite Valley for the Agriculture Project, much of the water for the project came from the river. Although because of soil erosion in the Artibonite valley lots of land for agriculture and energy potential has been lost. In the end the Artibonite river is a very big and important river that goes through parts of the Dominican Republic and most of Haiti.
