Geography

Haiti is a small country that occupies about â…“ of the island Hispaniola.  It is located in the Caribbean Sea and is about 27,750 square kilometers, most of which is 490 meters above sea level. The climate of Haiti is mostly determined by the elevation, for instance in the north, which has lower elevations, a more humid and tropical climate would be found. Haiti also has a tropical climate with a average temperature of high 70s to low 80s. There are many mountains and the highest elevation is 2,674 meters above sea level. Haiti also has a lot of rivers including the Artibonite which is the longest in Haiti and the second longest in the Caribbean. Even though Haiti has a lot of rivers it is also a relatively dry country due to mountains in the Dominican Republic blocking most of the moist winds from coming into the country. Even though Haiti is a rough and mountainous country most of the land is able to be used for farming, with 66% of the land used for agriculture. Haiti has a 1,771 kilometer coastline which is generally made of cliffs, but there are also many beaches. There are two seasons in Haiti, rainy season from May to December and dry season from December to April. Although, the amount of rainfall varies from place to place, for example in the northern part of the country they experience higher amounts of rainfall but places like the north western peninsula experience less. On average Haiti experiences 1,400 to 2,000 millimeters of rain with the drier areas sometimes only receiving 700 millimeters. In all Haiti is a small country that is relatively dry with lots of mountains and a big coastline. It is a great place to visit for its warm climate and multiple beaches to go to.
